JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Police Chief, assists in the planning, development, and direction of a complete program of police administration to protect the lives and property of the public. Acts for the Chief of Police in his absence and exercises supervision over any or all departmental employees as otherwise required. Duties involve assigning personnel to their positions, evaluating their work performances, and instructing them in new and approved police methods. Work is subject to the plans, policies and procedures formulated by the Chief of Police.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1) Participates in the overall direction of the department and the jail, assisting the Police Chief with various administrative and law enforcement responsibilities.
2) Develops plans for improving operations and obtaining more effective enforcement of laws and ordinances.
3) Assigns and reviews the work of subordinate personnel, giving technical advice as needed.
4) Assumes command of the department during the absence of the Police Chief.
5) Conducts internal investigations of personnel-related matters.
6) Conducts performance reviews, evaluations, and oversees promotional testing of subordinate officers.
7) Interprets new laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations for subordinate officers.
8) Assists the Chief of Police in the preparation and maintenance of departmental records, reports, and correspondence.
9) Represents the Chief of Police at public meetings, law enforcement seminars or other functions as required and provides good public relations whenever possible.
10) Reviews complaints from the public related to criminal offenses and other police matters, assigns appropriate personnel, and follows up to assure a satisfactory level of responsiveness.
11) Assists federal, state, and other law enforcement agencies in criminal detection, investigation and other activities.
12) Supervises employee training programs including training of emergency police reserve officials.
13) Supervises preparation of work schedules and approves time off.
14) Oversees and assists with the more difficult or complex criminal cases.
15) Assists in the preparation of the departmental budget and assists in the control of expenditures.
Requirements
To be considered a qualified applicant, respondents are expected to have minimally attained:
1) Ten or more years of progressively more responsible experience in law enforcement;
2) Experience in a supervisory role/rank in law enforcement; and
3) Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards certification or certifiable as a Police Officer.
4) Preferred: A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field, or an equivalent level of training and experience.
5) Preferred: Completion of Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy or Staff & Command
Prior to employment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation, psychological and physical examination, and a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of all pre-employment requirements. Please note this is a non-union appointed position.
