Indiana University's College of Arts and Sciences (The College) is a professional organization comprised of three schools (the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, the Media School; the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design), 80 departments and programs spanning the arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural and mathematical sciences and served by world-renowned faculty and skilled and talented administrators.Academic Advising in the College of Arts + Sciences
We are a team of professional academic advisors and administrators dedicated to providing support and expert guidance to undergraduate students in the College of Arts + Sciences, including the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, and The Media School.
College Advising is part of the Academic Engagement and Student Experience team (AESE) in the College, along with the Walter Center for Career Achievement, the College International Programs Office, and the College's Undergraduate Recruiting Team. We are part of a wider community of academic advisors on campus and beyond. We subscribe to NACADA's four Pillars of Academic Advising and embrace opportunities for continuous personal and professional growth.
This position is part of the IU Framework for Academic Advising and Career Development.
Job Summary
The person in the part-time appointed academic advisor role will provide academic advising for a students pursuing or considering undergraduate majors, minors or certificates in the College of Arts and Sciences.
General Responsibilities
- Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates.
- Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
- Meets with students in groups and one-on-one to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
- Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
- Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
- Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
- Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
- Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
- Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.
- Roles above the core, career level may include expanded duties and leadership and/or higher expectations of performance in line with the campus advising ecosystem.

EDUCATION
Required
- Master's degree in related field
- Master's degree in a liberal arts field
Required
- 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field
- Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired
- 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$33,250 annualized wage, paid monthly
Work Hours
This role is a .7FTE and will work 28 hours per week.
