GENERAL INFORMATION: Department: Police
Barg. Unit: Non-Union
Status: Full-Time (37.5 hours/week)
Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am – 4:30pm
Grade: 14 ($104,910-$154,011)
SUMMARY: The Police Chief is the chief administrative officer, the appointing authority, and final authority on all matters of policy, operations and discipline. The Police Chief exercises all lawful powers of that office and issues such lawful orders as are necessary to ensure the effective performance of the police department. Activities are conducted with considerable operational independence and personal judgement.
Through the Chief of Police, the Department is responsible for the effective delivery of police services to the community of Lewiston, as well as the enforcement of all laws under municipal jurisdiction.
The Chief of Police is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, controlling and staffing all activities of the Department and the training of its personnel. The Police Chief is also responsible for the Department’s continued and efficient operation, the enforcement of rules and regulations within the Department, for the completion and forwarding of such reports as may be required by proper authority, and for the Department’s relations with local citizens, local government and other related agencies.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate’s Degree required (Bachelor’s Degree Preferred) and at least ten (10) years progressive experience in the field of law enforcement and/or administration and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Maine Criminal Justice Academy law enforcement officer certification Preferred, ability to obtain.
Accredited supervisory training from a recognized collegiate-level Criminal Justice program.
Must establish City of Lewiston residency within 1 year.
