Description
This position involves general duty police work focused on protecting life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas, responding to citizen calls, conducting investigations, and maintaining accurate police records. Work is performed under general supervision and in accordance with established procedures.
Duties include but are not limited to
Patrolling assigned jurisdiction using patrol cars, motorcycles, bicycles, or horses.
Making traffic stops and intervening in criminal activity.
Monitoring police radio and responding to citizen calls and complaints.
Obtaining and issuing warrants.
Collecting, marking, and packaging evidence.
Processing crime scenes and investigating potential arson cases.
Conducting surveillance and interviewing suspects, witnesses, and victims.
Fingerprinting and photographing suspects.
Performing computer-based searches to gather suspect information.
Preparing for and testifying in court proceedings.
Coordinating with community agencies and groups.
Responding to public requests for information.
Maintaining case files, data, and reports.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
One year of experience as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer.
Must have met criteria for previous career development as a Police Recruit.
Preferred: Current certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
Waiver Options for Training
Option 1: At least 36 months of certified experience prior to separation AND separation within the last 24 months.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of English, basic math, and police equipment (radios, computers, radar, firearms, cameras).
Skills in conflict resolution, report writing, driving in varied conditions, applying laws and codes, and interpersonal communication.
Abilities to problem-solve, make sound decisions under stress, follow orders, work respectfully with the public, and handle stressful or hostile situations with maturity and professionalism.
Licensing and Certifications
U.S. citizenship required.
Valid drivers license required.
Must hold a valid Law Enforcement Certification from the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
