Position Information
Classification Title Mental Health Counselor II FLSA Exempt FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in counseling psychology or a related field and 2 years of professional experience
Preferred Qualifications
UHC Minimum:
- Master's degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, and Counseling
- Must be licensed as a LCSW, LMFT, LPC, Ph.D., or Psy.D. within the State of Georgia by the date of first employment.
- Background of at least two years in the evaluation and treatment of individuals whose age and psychological development are similar to traditional and non-traditional college students with a particular expertise in the professional school population through specific credentials/certifications and/or continuing education.
UHC Preferred:
- CPR/AED certification required within the first year of employment.
- Skill and/or interest in preventive psychological education and outreach programs.
- Training and 2 years or more of experience working with students from various backgrounds.
- Certifications and/or continuing education specific to wellness in the Professional School students/population. This is where knowledge about this population is presented, shared, and gathered. They have had national representatives from the CDC present about the trends in this profession, along with researchers who study suicidal behavior.
The School of Law/College of Pharmacy Counselor, a member of the CAPS professional staff, provides accessible primary, secondary, and tertiary services to eligible students at the School of Law and College of Pharmacy. The primary clinical function in this specialized service role will deliver care on-site within the learning environments at the Law and Pharmacy Campuses. Services provided encompass group, individual, crisis intervention, outreach, and consultation. Collaborating with the Student Services Coordinator, the Embedded Counselor is instrumental in creating wellness programs and participating in committees to promote a culture of seeking help and self-care within the School of Law and College of Pharmacy.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced work environment.
- Training and skills in providing telehealth services.
- Two years of clinical background in a college or university counseling or mental health setting.
- Advanced skill with disorders typically seen at a university counseling service.
- Advanced skill and expertise with the Professional school population and typical presenting concerns such as grief/bereavement, trauma, compassion fatigue, work/life balance, stress management, and interpersonal functioning.
- Background and familiarity with accreditation (JC, APA, IACS) requirements and standards.
- Competence and background in a multidisciplinary setting.
- Knowledge or interest in mental health outreach programming.
- Ability and interest in working in a setting involved in the training and supervision of counseling and psychotherapy to students in training or post-graduate professionals.
- Background in providing supervision of counseling and psychotherapy.
- Competence and background in using an electronic health record.
Sitting for extended periods, talking, hearing corrected to normal, corrected visual acuity adequate to utilize the electronic health record.

Client/Patient Direct and Support Services:
- Delivery of primary (mental health outreach), secondary, and tertiary counseling services to eligible members of the UGA community.
- Performs initial consultation evaluations (routine, urgent, and crisis) focusing on arriving at a preliminary diagnosis, and integrated treatment plan or appropriate referral based on the referring problem.
- Provide consultation within the legal boundaries of release-of-information.
- Develop idiosyncratic treatment plan based on an investigation of empirically supported treatment options, make appropriate referrals, and accurately document treatment provided.
- Provide clinical supervision for professional students in training.
Percentage of time 65 Duties/Responsibilities
Administrative Services:
- Prepares presentations, orientations, and grand rounds for programming and outreach.
- Actively seek to improve services to eligible members of the UGA community.
- Engage in meetings with the Student Affairs Coordinator for a minimum of 2x/month to coordinate and develop wellness programming with oversight from the Senior Director of CAPS and Fontaine.
- Attend staff and other assigned meetings/committees.
- Participates in PI projects.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Professional Development & Peer Consultation:
- Engage in continuing education specifically related to the Professional School population.
- Active involvement in all training programs including supervision of trainees, and educational activities
- Perform other duties as assigned.
