Description
Looking for two (2) skilled and experienced individual to join the Portland Regional Emergency Communications Center (PRCC) team as a 911 Shift Commander to assist in developing and empowering emergency communication telecommunicators. This position requires a leader passionate about staff development, a positive work environment, and a cohesive team.
The Shift Commander will be responsible for overseeing and managing the operations of the dispatch center. The ability to motivate, mentor, and support team leaders and telecommunicators is essential in maintaining a high standard of service and promoting career progression within the center. The Shift Commander will work closely with the Director, Deputy Director, Training/QA Coordinator, and frontline personnel to cultivate a supportive and resilient environment, recognizing their contributions to public safety every day. Under direction of the PRCC Deputy Director, the Shift Commander will assist in the planning, coordinating, and managing the operations and activities of the 911 Communications Center; develop and direct 911 Communications Center and Radio Division projects; supervise 911 Telecommunications operations; and supervise assigned personnel.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise Telecommunicator Team Leads and Telecommunicators.
Manage daily operations, including staffing, scheduling, payroll, and leave.
Act as incident commander, call-taker, or dispatcher as needed.
Monitor call volume for efficiency.
Conduct performance evaluations, training, and quality assurance.
Liaise with staff, training, and leadership.
Recommend policy updates. Troubleshoot technical issues and maintain equipment logs. Investigate incidents and provide recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or a related field (or equivalent experience)
7+ years of full-time experience as a telecommunicator in a public safety dispatch center
2+ years of supervisory or management experience in dispatch operations
Strong understanding of emergency communication procedures, technologies, and inter-agency operations
Proven leadership and decision-making abilities under pressure
Effective communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Required Certifications (Must obtain and maintain):
Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification
Emergency Fire Dispatch Certification
Certified Terminal Operator
Emergency Telecommunicator Certification
Next Generation 911 Certification
