Applied Research and Extension

Capitol Corridor (Sacramento and Beyond)

Position Overview

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), a statewide program with local development and delivery, is seeking the following UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Advisor.

 Location Headquarters.  UCCE Sacramento, California.

Purpose. The Environmental Horticulture Advisor will implement an innovative extension education and applied problem-solving research program to maximize the plant and human health benefits related to mitigating climate change in plants and trees in the Sacramento, Yolo, and Solano counties.

The focus will be on impact in urban areas with potential benefits beyond and will be driven by priority needs. The advisor will serve as an expert for issues related to mitigating climate change through plants and landscaping in urban environments. Work will consider landscape and urban design to identify and promote drought, heat, pest and fire-resistant landscape plants suitable for urban areas (homes, cities, parks, etc.) and tree species that cool urban heat islands and reduce energy use and related costs. Water runoff, reduced waterway pollution and enhanced habitats will be considerations.

The Advisor will develop and deliver research-based information using a range of communication options to create positive community impact.

The advisor will support and enhance horticultural education programs at the Fair Oaks Horticultural Center Demonstration Garden; providing training and program support to the Master Gardener programs in Sacramento, Yolo and Solano counties and support the broader statewide Master Gardener effort. The Master Gardener volunteers offer a rich resource for community outreach and engagement.

This is an exciting opportunity to have meaningful impacts in the Sacramento Valley; engaging with county and other institutions, non-profit organizations, the 'green industry', homeowners, industry, and regulators., and others. 

Opportunities abound for research and extension partnerships that link producers, consumers and professionals across multi-sectors with relevant science-based information and promote effective problem solving.  The advisor will also join a team of highly motivated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and are dedicated to making a difference within the communities and throughout California.  The potential for collaborative projects within the UC ANR system is nearly limitless.

Counties of Responsibility. This position is focused on Sacramento, Yolo, and Solano Counties.  There is an opportunity to work collaboratively across other counties as well.

Reporting Relationship: The CE Advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Capitol Corridor MCP County Director.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Required Qualifications

Education:   A minimum of a Master’s degree in environmental horticulture or other closely related fields is required at the time of appointment.

Additional Requirements

  • Live within a commutable distance of the position headquarters during period of appointment.
  • The CE Advisor must possess or obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License prior to applying pesticides or supervising the application of any pesticide.

Desired Experience

  • Passion and desire to pursue a career in Extension and community development.
  • Experience in successful Extension programming or community development,
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, manage teams and implement a research program, including setting measurable goals and objectives.

The candidate should have a deep understanding of key concepts related to environmental horticulture able to design and implement a program that leads to positive changes and impact within the community and beyond. There is an expectation that advisors evolve and grow across their career and may even need to change the focus of their work.

Salary & Benefits

This position is eligible for indefinite status following three successful reviews and subject to terms noted in UC ANR Policy and Procedure Manual, Section 315 https://ucanr.edu/sites/anrstaff/files/118501.pdf

Benefits: The University of California offers comprehensive benefits including vacation, sick leave, and approximately thirteen paid holidays per year. This position is eligible for sabbatical leave privileges as per the terms of University policy and is eligible for indefinite status.
