Davis Wright Tremaine LLP’s Technology, Communications, Privacy & Security Practice Group is looking for a senior-level communications attorney for a contract engagement. The selected contract attorney will provide regulatory and commercial advice and services related to television broadcasting and content licensing to the Firm’s broadcast television and radio clients.

Senior attorneys with experience handling regulatory and commercial matters for broadcast television and radio station licensees, who are seeking a flexible schedule and an alternative-track position, are encouraged to apply. Besides flexibility, candidates can expect to work closely with DWT lawyers and clients as part of the Communications team, providing high-value legal services to preeminent clients.

The work is available immediately, but we anticipate that the greatest volume of work will arise in Q3 and Q4 2022 and into 2023. The position will start with an initial 6-month contract term. We are open to candidates who are seeking a traditional full-time schedule, as well as candidates who seek a reduced, flexible schedule of 25 to 30 hours per week. Subject to deadlines and constraints, the attorney could have significant flexibility in setting her/his own schedule.

For successful candidates in this position, there is significant opportunity and room for growth in the role. Candidates who wish to continue on the alternative-track path may be repeatedly renewed on a contract-basis and may have the opportunity for continuous, ongoing work dedicated to specific clients. For candidates who have the interest and ability to grow existing client business relationships, and establish new relationships, there may be an opportunity to build their practice by increasing their responsibilities, the volume of work they manage, and the breadth of work they handle for clients. This may potentially lead to consideration for a more traditional permanent or partnership-track attorney position.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 7+ years of experience practicing in-house at a media broadcasting company or at a law firm providing legal counsel to television, radio or digital broadcasting businesses.
  • Admission to practice in any of the following states: AK, AZ, CA, CT, D.C., FL, GA, IL, KS, MD, MN, MT, NJ, NY, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, VA, or WA. Candidates near or able to commute to the D.C. Metro area are preferred.
  • Significant experience handling broadcasting legal issues with a focus on regulatory compliance and content licensing contracts for TV/digital media networks and studios.
  • Familiarity representing broadcasters before the FCC and advising on complex policy matters and government mandates.
  • Ability to interpret and advise on FCC regulatory issues in emerging areas of technology distribution platforms and business models, including, e.g., ATSC 3.0.
  • Commercial contracts experience, with the ability to counsel clients on legal issues related to content licensing and distribution relationships, including network affiliation agreements, retransmission consent agreements and similar relationships.
  • The ability to answer novel legal questions arising from technological and marketplace developments and analyze complex commercial contractual provisions.
  • Willingness and ability to attend in-person meetings in the D.C. Metro. Employees will be required to adhere to the vaccination policy and safety protocol of the Firm’s D.C. office and client/government agency facilities, as needed.
  • High levels of productivity and efficiency when delivering work product and managing deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience collaborating effectively with multiple stakeholders.
  • The ability to multi-task and work both independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines.
  • Strong ability and drive to deepen and develop client business relationships, and shepherd clients through complex, highly regulated processes as new business lines are developed.

This is a contract-based position and compensation will be on an hourly or other mutually agreeable basis, commensurate with experience and skill level. commensurate with experience and skill level. We are interested in candidates electing to pursue a more flexible way of providing continuous, high-value legal services to the firm and our clients. If you are interested in a partner position, please check the DWT careers page for lateral opportunities.
